The Silk Road, also the “Stans”, is without a doubt one of the most critical routes in history linking East and West. But it does cross five diverse countries: Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan, all of which have different requirements and a lot of distance inbetween.
Planning is essential for a successful and enjoyable trip; here are some crucial tips to help you!
- Turkmenistan Visa Approval (step one is the hardest).
- Obtain necessary visas for each country. Some may offer visa-on-arrival, while others may require pre-application.
- Enough USD cash for your trip; there are no ATMs in Turkmenistan. Throughout the other Stans, ATMs are becoming much more accepted. However, they can only be partially relied on and are sometimes difficult to find.
- Inform your bank of travel plans to avoid issues with using your credit or debit cards abroad.
- 2 x Printed copies of your Turkmenistan visa (in case you lose one).
- Keep a digital and physical copy of important documents such as passports, visas, travel insurance, and emergency contacts.
- 4 x Passport photos (sometimes required).
- Purchase travel Insurance.
- Let those closest know you won’t be contactable in Turkmenistan and share a rough travel itinerary.
- Download podcasts and movies for long drives or find a good book.
- Bring a portable battery (or two).
- Pack a flashlight or headlamp.
- Headscarf (for women).
- Pen (ready for all border crossings).
- A good pair of walking shoes!
- A swimsuit, there is a surprising amount of opportunities to take a dip.
- Check luggage is under 20kgs; avoid lugging around unnecessary stuff, especially at border crossings.
- A travel adaptor for a European style 2-prong type C/F.
- A refillable water bottle: lots of hotels allow free refills.
- Check with your doctor for recommended vaccinations and medications for travel in Central Asia.
- Carry a basic medical kit, including essential medications.
